What Makes Summer So Great

I truly could go on forever about how much I love summer - this is not a mere infatuation, mind, this is a deep down, serious adulation. I could quite easily fit in with any culture who worships the sun - but I will limit it to just the top 10 things of which I am so enamored in no particular order.

  1. SUNSHINE!!!! I am a solar powered creature and do best when there is sunshine in abundance!
  2. Being WARM! Oh, blessed heat! I love being warm and would much rather be scorching hot than freezing cold. It takes forever for my feet to warm up, and I can't fall asleep until they are warm.
  3. Going for walks on a beautiful summer morning or evening (or afternoon for that matter).
  4. Green grass and flowers. I love playing in the dirt and gardening (although I haven't had a whole lot of time to do that lately).
5. Being able to go outside without having to put layer upon layer of clothes on to ward off the insidious cold!
6. Camping, hiking, walking, biking, dirt biking, running, playing, sitting, etc. Anything that is OUTSIDE!
7. Barbecues (or "garbage-cues" as Eli pronounces it) and good times with friends.

8. That the sun is up at 5 am and doesn't go to bed until 10:30 or later.

9. Sitting outside at night and gazing up at the stars and pondering things much greater than I until I feel like my head is going to explode with the enormity and depth of it all. This is best practiced far away from city lights in the more serene places in the world.

Example, this is an infrared image taken by the Hubble of galaxies (those are all different galaxies!!!!) 12 billion lightyears away at the edge of the observable Universe, Hubble's Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer were focused on a small area of sky above the handle of the Big Dipper in the constellation Ursa Major. This is an area of the sky that appears to be empty, but when the Hubble was left gazing out into what we thought was vacant space, we found it to be full of galaxies!

If that doesn't blow your mind, I don't know what will. Yowza!

10. Did I mention SUNSHINE????

One of the things I love about summer is the sunrise and sunset. It does throw me off though. I was used to working and the sun coming up at 9am. Each time I am at work and it's light outside, I think it's about 9 and I'm WAY behind.

When I get some more spending money, I am looking at buying a telescope to look at the sky and make myself feel more insignificant in the large perspective. You are definitely invited if you want to come.
