We celebrated our 4th on Tuesday because Brandon had to work. We went and found a firework stand-and we had to do some searching for one I might add. I guess our side of town has a prejudice against firework stands. We got some sparklers and tanks to introduce Eli to these magical things. No, you still can't play with fire, but once a year we will let you play with fireworks. Don't you just love the constant contradictions of parenthood?
Eli was quite enthralled with the sparklers and - woah buddy - he loved the tanks! Needless to say he was jabbering about the tailpipes, headlights, and tracks on the tanks for quite a while. I bought one fountain. Eli thought it was pretty until it started to get noisy. Man, that kid bolted for the door. You could see he was thinking, "I have no idea what that is, but you and Dad can fend for yourselves - I'm so outta here!!"
There were quite a few fireworks around our neighborhood last night. It doesn't get dark until about 10:20 here, so Eli was already in bed (after an especially ornery afternoon filled with tantrum after tantrum). Brandon was at work, and Xander was quietly sawing logs in the Moby. I felt especially lonely sitting out on the driveway watching the fireworks all by myself. I even tried to wake Eli up so he could see the show. Alas, he had totally worn himself out with such an impressive show of screaming and tantrums. I called Brandon at work and bugged him for a bit. I can't wait until he doesn't have to work nights anymore!
I am so grateful for this country, even with all its craziness! It is like a relative who is a bit off and eccentric with some odd habits, but you love them all the more for it. I love our freedoms and all the abundance of, well, just about everything. I love that I can raise my kids here and give them everything this world has to offer. America, it's a great place to live!
