A Child's Prayer

I just finished re-tucking Eli in for his nap after he was playing around for 2 hours. I had him all snuggled up on my lap (a more and more crowded space these days) and he wanted to just read more books and goof around with Mom. So, I started singing him A Child's Prayer. I haven't been singing to him as much lately because his attention span hasn't seemed adequate. So I was totally surprised when he started singing along. He hummed most of it, but he did know about two words from every line. Tears started welling up in my eyes in combination with giggles at some of his word substitutions. Here are the words to the song. The words Eli sang are in bold, and his substitutions are in parentheses after the correct wording.

Heavenly Father, are you really there?
And do you hear and answer (AWESOME!) every child's prayer?
Some say that heaven is far away,
But I feel it close around me every day.

Heavenly Father, I remember now,
Something that Jesus told disciples long ago.
Suffer (AWESOME!) the children to come to me.
Father in prayer I come to thee.

Pray, He is near,
Speak, He is listening,
You are his child, (he really got excited for this part)
His love now surrounds you.

He hears your prayers.
He loves the children.
Of such is the kingdom (AWESOME!),
The kingdom (AWESOME!) of heaven.
